The marriage alliance between Rathore Siahji and the sister of a local prince made the Rathores powerful and prosperous. They found Mandore inadequate for themselves and moved to a more formidable and secure place. Roa Jodha, the chief of the Rathore clan founded the new city in 1459 AD and named it after himself as Jodhpur. Jodhpur is also known ad the 'Blue City'.

Mehrangarh Fort was built in the 15th century by the Rathore Rajputs when they shifted their seat of power from Mandore to Jodhpur. The blue print of the building was prepared by the British Royal institute of Architects. Also known as Chittar Palace because of the use of local chittar sandstone in its construction, the palace took 15 years to complete. It has now been converted into a heritage hotel except for a part of it, which is used by Present Maharaja Gaj Singh II as his residence.
While on holiday in Jodhpur, do not miss to visit the Jaswant Thada, the traditional cremation ground of the rulers of Jodhpur. The most impressive memorial is that of Jaswant Singh II built in 1899 AD. The white marble cenotaph is decorated with ornamental gardens and chattris of white marble.
