You will visit the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary or Keoladeo Ghana National Park on tours to Bharatpur. There is an ancient Hindu temple, Keoladeo dedicated to Lord Shiva within the premises of the sanctuary. Ghana is a Hindi word, which means 'dense forest'. These two words combined together gave the park its name.
Prince Bhamji of Morvi state in Gujarat has transformed this area into a royal hunting ground for himself. Bharatpur reserve was given the status of a bird sanctuary but the erstwhile rulers of Bharatpur continued to enjoy the shooting rights over the area till 1972. The sanctuary was upgraded to a National Park in 1981. Dr. Salim Ali, an ornithologist, initiated the conservation activities in the park. The year 1985 was significant for the park because Keoladeo National Park was listed as the World Heritage Site.

The palace is built in Mughal as well as Rajasthani style of architecture. The palace houses a government museum with exhibition of the artifacts, sculptures and inscriptions.
